From the Desk of the President

June 7, 2023

Missionaries,

I am sure all of you have heard that the NAACP has released an announcement through the news media asking all African Americans not to travel to the state of Florida. We selected the Hyatt Regency Riverfront Hotel in Jacksonville, Florida over a year ago. If we cancel the Twentieth Quadrennial Assembly we must pay the hotel a large sum of money.

I do advise that you do not spend any money or make any visitations while we are in attendance at the meeting. Please visit our vendors, they have many beautiful items that you may select from.

The Women’s Missionary Council is planning an exciting and enthusiastic week of worship, teaching and learning during this meeting. I know that each of you will enjoy every moment while you are in attendance.

I am looking forward to seeing each and every one of you at our meeting.

“May the Blessings of God be upon each of us!”

Sincerely,

Dr. Jacqueline I. Scott

Bishop Lawson K. Adjei, the 68th Bishop and Presiding Prelate of the 11th Episcopal of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, closes the Burundi Region Annual Conference on June 11th in Bujumbura with an eventful thanksgiving and ordination service. Members came from length and breadth of the country to join at service. Songs were delivered by almost each local church choirs present. Two Pastors were ordained to the orders of Elder. Bishop preached the sermon on the theme "Be Bold: Seek Ye First The Kingdom of God. " Pastoral appointments were made . The other 2 country churches were also presented with seed fund of $500 each to help in starting their new church buildings. Of course they already have baked blocks. Conference officers were duly appointed and acknowledged financially to keep our missions growing. The conference also presented Bishop with gifts of artifacts and clothes. A small drum was presented to Bishop because when it sounds, the people must listen. Burundi conference tells me when l sound the drum of any message they will listen to me. Also a shield was given as symbol of protection when the enemy attacks. They have given it to me to let me know that they will always protect me from the enemy. Lastly, a guitar presented was to make traditional music. This is love, appreciation and commitment that any leader of the church could receive. Bishop Adjei have been assured of phenomenal growth in years to come.Thank you Burundi Region. To God be the glory. Photos and caption provided by Bishop Adjei.

#BlackChurches4Broadband Encourages Families to Sign up for Emergency Broadband (Internet) Benefit

Our hero, the late Congressman John Lewis, said that internet access is “the civil rights issue of the 21st Century.” A high-speed home broadband (internet) connection is vital for full enfranchisement in today’s world. It opens the door to educational and economic opportunities, connects family and church communities, allows access to remote health care services, and empowers greater civic engagement and activism.

Congress recently created an Emergency Broadband Benefit giving eligible families up to $50 per month to pay for home broadband service. You may be eligible for the Emergency Broadband Benefit if your household has experienced a sudden loss of income during the pandemic, or is currently receiving federal benefits such as SNAP, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans and Survivors Pension Benefit, Lifeline, Pell Grants, or free and reduced-price school lunches.

Visit blackchurches4broadband.org to learn more about eligibility and how to sign up.
